Steeped in history, evidence of human habitation dates back thousands of years. Iron Age settlements such as the Iron Age village of Chysauster Ancient Village represent local culture and heritage.

    Kynance Cove

The Lizard Peninsula AONB is home to several stunning beaches, each attractive, diverse and catering to all tastes. Kynance Cove is the best-known stretch of sand on the Lizard. Photographers and families can't get enough of its glorious beach, turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. Family-friendly beaches like Gunwalloe are convenient and safe, patrolled by lifeguards in summer, with easy access to refreshments, toilets and ample parking space. Remote beaches like Lankidden are often hard to reach (think mile-long coastal path), yet reward visitors with an empty beach safe for wild swimming.Coves and inlets are beautiful, secluded spots for splashing around, ideal for more intimate and natural beach days. The lovely cove of Housel Bay rests at the base of serpentine cliffs, and is a wonderful spot for swimming in the clearest turquoise waters imaginable.

Wild swimmers are spoiled for choice, with an array of natural tidal pools, offshore rocks, and crystal-clear sea caves. We advise caution when swimming in these areas, as they may have strong currents and uneven terrain.

Pay heed to local weather reports, warning signals, and advice from the locals. Cornwall’s weather is often unpredictable, even in the warmer months of the year. We recommend preparing for rain.
